C-Si or CIGS solar cells?

Green energy generation is also becoming increasingly important in the transport sector and more and more companies are seeing the benefits. For example, installing solar cells on trucks and trailers is becoming increasingly popular. As a result of rising demand, the number of providers is rising in line with this. Unfortunately, this also causes lower-quality, and potentially even dangerous, solar cells to enter the market. This is especially the case with traditional c-Si solar cells. Indeed, with these solar cells, there is a greater risk of fire. Our Green Energy solar cells use CIGS technology and are therefore safe to generate power with, though. We would like to tell you more about both solar cell technologies.

Hazard of c-Si solar cells

Recently, there have been increasing reports of solar cells on vehicles catching fire, as shown in the pictures to the right. These highly flammable solar cells are of the material c-Si (crystalline silicon). When the c-Si solar cells are installed, they seem to work properly. Still, performance will deteriorate quite quickly.

In addition, they are also very unsafe. Each cell consists of multiple rows of silicon cells. A silicon cell is a semiconductor that causes solar light energy to be converted directly into electrical energy. Each individual cell has those or four solder points connected to the next cell. During vibration of the roof of a trailer (which always happens while driving trucks), a crack can occur at those solder points, causing them to become very hot and cause a fire.

 

A second danger through which fire can occur is through ‘micro cracks’. These tiny cracks cannot be seen with the naked eye. They may already occur during transportation or the mounting of the solar cells on the truck. When the temperature gets too high, these small cracks can quickly catch fire.

Safe energy generation with CIGS Green Energy solar cells

Our solar cells from Green Energy use CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) technology. This technology has the great advantage of not containing any solder points and being very flexible so there is no risk of ‘micro cracks’. As a result, nothing cracks at solder points and they cannot eventually catch fire, and their flexibility also allows them to be used if they need to be placed slightly bent. These solar cells are made specifically for on vehicles.

These cells also use MIPV solar cell technology. MIPV stands for Mobile Integrated Photovoltaic and uses the full light spectrum that generates light – even before the eye perceives daylight. This brings the advantage that the solar cells are more light-sensitive and therefore a CIGS solar cell with a 100-watt peak will produce about 10-15% more power in a year than a c-Si solar cell with a 100-watt peak. CIGS cells start earlier in the morning and stay on longer in the evening. As a result, the yield will also be better in grey weather when you need the power the most.
