Solar cells at Lesscher for sustainable use of modern truck
That drivers today expect much more comfort in the cabin of a modern truck is a fact. However, these comfort-enhancing items such as, microwaves, coffee machines and the necessary screens sometimes also cause problems. Particularly during the winter period, the battery is heavily used, which can cause the vehicle to suffer from (start-up) problems. ‘We believe in a comfortable working environment for our drivers, but of course continuity must also be guaranteed,’ says Jos Lesscher, director of the transport company of the same name. With this in mind, Jos reported to Peter Nijhuis of Heisterkamp Truckservice in February this year to look for a solution together.

Going the extra mile
‘Besides regular repair and maintenance work, we see a particular challenge in providing innovative solutions for our customers,’ Peter explains. ‘When asked by Jos, I immediately had to think of the Green Energy solar cells that we recently included in our delivery programme through Wijlhuizen. This solution is often looked at for reducing CO2 emissions, but it is also excellent for supporting the battery in a vehicle.
Heisterkamp recently built a new and beautiful fire-red DAF XG+ for Lesscher Transport from Deurningen. When preparing the vehicle, a Green Energy solar cell set was immediately fitted. These solar cells are extremely thin (the panels are only a few millimetres thick) and flexible. As a result, you can hardly see the panels and they can be mounted on the sloping surface of the spoiler and the roof of the cabin without any problems. ‘Especially with the tall DAF XG+ an added bonus, because otherwise you quickly exceed the maximum height.’ Says Edward Canestri, key account manager at Wijlhuizen and a specialist in Green Energy products.
Plug and play
Despite what may seem complicated, Green Energy’s panels are relatively easy to install. ‘For a qualified fitter, it’s almost plug and play,’ laughs Peter Nijhuis. ‘And the inverter supplied also makes it clear at any time what the output of the panels is.’ Mounting the panels themselves is also a piece of cake with the specially developed adhesive. This remains flexible, ensuring operation and proper adhesion of the panels.

The future
Jos Lesscher is happy with Heisterkamp Truckservice’s thinking on his issue and is looking forward to the first results. ‘Our need was to ensure the continuity of our vehicles, but now that we have started, we are also closely monitoring fuel and CO2 emission savings. It is nice to be able to be part of the energy transition with this sustainable solution as well, especially since it is also economically justifiable.’ Peter fully agrees with Jos: ‘All in all, this is a very practical solution with a green edge.’ And so it has come full circle, as Transport company Lesscher has been known for its transport of ornamental plants and nursery products for years.
