From 1 January 2025, all vehicles with an analogue or digital tachograph (G1) operating internationally must be equipped with a smart tacho 2. At the last meeting of the ‘Committee on Road Transport’, it was agreed that a two-month ‘educational learning period’ would be established.

This grace period means that in January and February 2025, enforcers will focus mainly on raising awareness about this obligation, rather than directly imposing fines on carriers that have not yet completed the retrofit.
This learning period does not apply to the next deadline of 19 August 2025, when vehicles with smart tacho 1 must be upgraded for international transport. The European Commission is thus responding to the concerns of member states facing problems with the mandatory retrofit of the digital tachograph (G1).

Hauliers are advised to carry out the retrofit as soon as possible to avoid fines after this period. In addition, the control period for drivers will be extended from 28 to 56 days from 1 January 2025, meaning they will have to be able to produce data over a longer period during roadside checks.
The next important deadline is on 19 August. Vehicles equipped with a smart tacho 1 must be fitted with a smart tacho 2 by that date to comply with the regulations for international transport. Use the button below to view our range for the 2nd generation digital tachograph!
